What is Grief?

People naturally respond to different things that happen in their lives. Grief is typically seen as people’s response to a loss. That loss could be many different things in people’s lives but it is usually the loss of an important person in their life. Loss of a loved one brings a lot of difficult emotions, thoughts and memories and it could be very overwhelming to deal with. At Couch Conversations Psychotherapy and Counseling, we understand how difficult it could be to deal with all of the emotions that come from loss and the process it takes to reach a place of healing and ultimately, acceptance.
I’ve Had a Loss and Don’t Know What to Do
It is very common to not know how to handle a difficult loss. The truth is, there are many different ways that people respond to a loss and there isn’t necessarily one way to do it. Facing such a difficult situation could be overwhelming, but it could also be an opportunity to change your perspective and look at things in your life differently.
While you may not want to talk to many people during this time and just want to be “left alone” to deal with your loss by yourself, it is more important than ever to reach out to your community, social support system and any other resources available to you during this time. You don’t have to face this difficulty alone and your mind will heal more quickly when connecting with others instead of trying to deal with it by yourself.
Can Therapy Help me with my Loss?
Grief counseling is not easy for people who have experienced a loss. It could be a constant reminder of the loss, at a time where you may just want to forget about it or keep yourself distracted by something else. But giving yourself the time and opportunity to address a very difficult situation through therapy could be one of the biggest gifts you give yourself on your journey to healing. Our Couch Conversations therapists provide education on the grief cycle and what to expect from it. The process of therapy also allows you to examine your thoughts, feelings and behaviors and determine whether there could be improvement in your day-to-day life and the thoughts you may be experiencing as a result of the loss.
Learning how to cope with loss by being honest with how the loss is impacting you, and by finding ways to heal from the loss will give you a pathway of overcoming difficult emotions. Grief counseling with your Couch Conversations psychotherapist takes time, commitment and mental energy, but it could also open up space in your life to find a way to accept your grief rather than try to resist it.
